Most XPress problems announce themselves with a message. This page is organised around the message you actually see. If yours is not here, email support@bytera.tech - we answer.
XPress doesn’t appear in a space sidebar
Section titled “XPress doesn’t appear in a space sidebar”- Not installed, or disabled - in Confluence go to Settings → Apps → Manage apps and check XPress is enabled.
- Browser cache - hard-refresh with Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R.
- Licence - if you see a “Your XPress licence is not active” message, renew the trial or subscription from the Marketplace.
You do not have to use the space sidebar. XPress also adds a global XPress page for exporting across spaces, and an Export to PDF action on any individual page, both in the page’s byline and in its ··· menu.
A feature described in these docs isn’t in my XPress
Section titled “A feature described in these docs isn’t in my XPress”You are probably on an older version. Small updates install themselves, but a release that asks for a new permission waits for a Confluence admin to approve it - and until someone does, your site keeps running the version it already has.
An admin can check at admin.atlassian.com → your site → Apps, where a pending release shows XPress as Outdated with an option to review the new permissions and approve.
This is the single most common reason a customer cannot find export templates.
Page tree is empty
Section titled “Page tree is empty”- The space has no published pages - create one first.
- The pages are restricted from your account. XPress only ever shows and exports what you can already read.
- The space uses folders, whiteboards or databases. You can tick them, but they are not documents, so they are left out when the export runs - tick a page or blog post as well.
“Select at least one page to export”
Section titled ““Select at least one page to export””Nothing is selected. Tick at least one page or blog post in the tree, then export.
“None of the selected items are pages you can export”
Section titled ““None of the selected items are pages you can export””Everything you picked was either a non-document item or a page your account cannot read. Try selecting a page you can open normally in Confluence.
“Too many items selected for a single export”
Section titled ““Too many items selected for a single export””One export can only reach so far. Split the job - export a branch at a time rather than an entire space in one go - and you will also get a document people can actually navigate.
“You have started a lot of exports recently”
Section titled ““You have started a lot of exports recently””There is a limit on how many exports one account can start in quick succession. Wait a couple of minutes and try again.
“This export is too large to render as a PDF”
Section titled ““This export is too large to render as a PDF””The message tells you the fastest fix: switch Format to HTML in the settings, which handles very large documents comfortably.
If you need it as a PDF, split the selection into a few smaller exports. If neither works for you, email support@bytera.tech - we would like to know.
“Some of the selected content could not be read”
Section titled ““Some of the selected content could not be read””The page tree changed between selecting and exporting - typically a page was moved, deleted, or its restrictions changed. Refresh the page tree and run the export again.
A specific page is missing from the export
Section titled “A specific page is missing from the export”- It is not a document. Folders, whiteboards and databases are skipped.
- You cannot read it. Every page is re-checked against your permissions at export time, so anything you are restricted from is left out rather than leaked into the file.
- It is empty. A page with no body produces nothing to export.
Images aren’t appearing
Section titled “Images aren’t appearing”XPress embeds PNG and JPEG attachments. Other formats - SVG, GIF, WebP, BMP - are not embedded and will be missing from the document. If an image matters, save it as a PNG or JPEG and attach it to the page.
Two more causes worth checking:
- Externally hosted images - a picture loaded from another website, rather than attached to the page, is not reliably included. Attach it instead.
- Very image-heavy exports - a document with a great many large pictures may come out with the later ones missing rather than failing altogether. Splitting the selection into smaller exports fixes it.
A macro renders empty
Section titled “A macro renders empty”Macros that embed an external website do not render in an export. The surrounding content is unaffected - you get the page with that one block empty.
Panels, status lozenges, tables, code blocks, layouts and emoji all come through looking the way they do on the page.
Tables look squished or overflow the page
Section titled “Tables look squished or overflow the page”A wide table has to fit the paper. Options, cheapest first:
- Switch Orientation to Landscape.
- Move up to A3.
- Reduce the left and right margins.
- Or export as HTML, which has no page width to fit at all.
The Wide (landscape) starter template is landscape with tight margins, built for exactly this.
Confluence panels look slightly different
Section titled “Confluence panels look slightly different”Exports carry Confluence’s own styling, so content should look like the source page. Small differences come from the shift to paper: no hover states, no scrollbars, and anything that relied on the browser window resizing is now fixed at one width.
If a panel is missing entirely rather than styled differently, that is worth reporting.
What order do pages come out in?
Section titled “What order do pages come out in?”Pages follow the page tree - top to bottom, children under their parent - matching the order you see in Confluence. There is no manual reordering inside an export; if you need a different sequence, run separate exports and combine them.
Does each page start on a new sheet?
Section titled “Does each page start on a new sheet?”Yes. In PDF, every exported page begins on a fresh sheet, so a bulk export reads as a document with sections rather than one continuous stream. Cover and contents pages get their own sheets too.
Bulk export is taking a while
Section titled “Bulk export is taking a while”Large exports run in the background - you can keep working in Confluence and come back to the Exports tab. Time scales with page count and, more than anything, with images.
If it is slower than you can wait: split the selection, or export as HTML.
Are my settings remembered?
Section titled “Are my settings remembered?”Yes, in two ways:
- Templates are saved permanently and shared across your site. That is the intended way to keep a configuration - see Export Templates.
- The last configuration used in a space is restored when the export panel is reopened there, though the template you pick still decides anything it defines.
A space can also nominate a default template, which one-click exports use automatically. Only a space admin or site admin can set it.
Does XPress work with Confluence Data Center or Server?
Section titled “Does XPress work with Confluence Data Center or Server?”No. XPress works only on Confluence Cloud.
